As the Sisdol landfill fills up, garbage piles up in Kathmandu once more.
Rubbish has piled up once again in the Kathmandu valley, as the Sisdol landfill site in Nuwakot’s Okharpauwa is overflowing.
Waste management in Kathmandu encounters roadblocks every few months due to a variety of factors. The landfill site filling up is a recurring issue, as the site was only chosen for three years in 2006. However, 15 years later, the government has not been able to come up with a viable alternative.
Local governments in Kathmandu used to handle waste disposal and smoothing the ground themselves in previous years. According to Shrestha, the same is being done now.
Shrestha, on the other hand, believes that the federal government should start preparing the new landfill site in Bancharedanda, on the Dhading-Nuwakot border, as soon as possible. The construction work is moving at a snail’s pace there.
