Rubbish has piled up once again in the , as the Sisdol landfill site in Nuwakot’s Okharpauwa is overflowing.

Hari Kumar Shrestha, the head of the Kathmandu Metropolitan ’s Environment Department, says the city government has unable to transport waste for the past two days due to a lack of space.

Waste management in Kathmandu encounters roadblocks every few months due to a variety of factors. The landfill site filling up is a recurring issue, as the site was only chosen for three years in 2006. However, 15 years later, the government has not been able to come up with a viable alternative.

Local governments in Kathmandu used to handle waste disposal and smoothing the ground themselves in previous years. According to Shrestha, the same is being done now.

Shrestha, on the other hand, believes the federal government should start preparing the new landfill site in Bancharedanda, on the Dhading-Nuwakot , as soon as possible. The construction work is moving at a snail’s pace there.
