Nepal Telecom (NTC) plans to test its much-anticipated 5G network by the end of Poush this year, potentially by 2021. The state-owned telco has submitted its work plan to the NTA in order to obtain 5G spectrum.
Nepal Telecom, the country’s major telecom operator, has stepped up its attempts to launch 5G services. It has submitted a 5G work plan to the NTA in order to get spectrum for the fifth-generation cellular network. Previously, the Nepalese government decided to grant Nepal Telecom with a year of free 5G spectrum. If everything goes according to plan, NTC hopes to commence its trial by the end of Poush.
NTC has requested lower and mid-band spectrum in its work plan, which was handed over to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority. According to Technologykhabar, if allowed, NTC will run its 5G network between 700MHz and 800MHz or in the 2600MHz range.
Purushottam Khanal, Chairman of the NTA, stated, “NTC has presented its 5G work plan.” We are actively researching its 5G strategy and will reach a decision through a committee.”
As previously stated, Nepal Telecom will conduct the trials in both rural and urban areas. This will allow the telecom to compare the coverage and efficiency of the fifth-generation network in two different scenarios.
To Determine 5G Spectrum, a Tech Neutral Policy Will Be Adopted
Ambar Sthapit, NTA Deputy Director, stated that NTA is now studying Nepal Telecom’s 5G work plan and that NTA is formulating its own 5G standards before responding to NTC’s demands.
“The Nepal Telecommunications Authority has established a committee to investigate 5G testing and spectrum availability. After the committee completes its investigation, the NTA will provide the spectrum and other technical assistance to the NTC,” said the Deputy Director.
The committee will conclude its 5G procedure within 15 days and decide whether to provide NTC with fifth-generation spectrum in accordance with the Tech Neutrality Policy. The NTA will establish criteria for all telecom providers and evaluate the best 5G spectrum for each of them. In the forthcoming Fiscal Year 078/79, NTA will speed the rollout of its 5G spectrum for other telecoms in line.
Meanwhile, NTC has acknowledged that it is awaiting the NTA’s final decision on the launch of its fifth-generation network. Following the end of the telco authorization, NTC will begin the acquisition of necessary equipment, which will take time.
The state-backed telco has held discussions with 5G equipment providers, and if everything goes according to plan, NTC might begin 5G testing by Poush 2078, which might be in 2021.
NTC’s 5G testing has been a long time coming, and it appears that the telco is now ready to launch the groundbreaking fifth-generation cellular network.
The good news is that NTC will conduct its 5G test in both urban and rural locations. How eager are you to put your device through its paces with ultra-fast 5G broadband? Please let us know in the comments section below.
